The
best cosmetic dentists are also artists; the technical
side is crucial. In Australia, US and Europe less than
1% of dentists make their own porcelain crowns and veneers;
they usually work closely with dental ceramists or employ
a dental technician. A successful dental restoration
is due to proper planning and collaboration of the specialist
dentist and ceramist team.
Redesigning a smile should include a choice of tooth
colour, which must blend with existing teeth . Preferred
lipstick shades and the age and personality of the patient
are also taken into consideration.
Showing the patient a detailed and enlarged picture
of the proposed tooth shape clarifies before such a
tooth is made, if this is what the patient really likes.
Australia is a multicultural country and there are many
different opinions on aesthetics. It is important to
discuss these before treatment begins.
Before we start, we usually provide a complimentary
imaging session. The reason we do this is because it
is very difficult for most people to imagine what their
smile will look like after treatment. By creating a
picture of the teeth being changed step-by-step, and
explaining what kind of procedure is going to be used,
you can understand all the necessary steps clearly.
After this a copy of your photos (and some more detailed
information) is sent to the dentist who is doing the
clinical work. The dentist will then assess whether
the work is clinically possible. If the expertise of
a dental ceramist is needed, the teeth are prepared
by the dentist and a mould is sent to the laboratory
where the ceramist makes each tooth individually to
match the previous computer imaging.
